Hoyer Statement Two Years After Dobbs

June 24, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today two years after the Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade:

“Today marks two years since the Republican-appointed majority in the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in their Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. In the two years since this devastating decision, we’ve seen states roll back the clock – banning access to emergency care, placing harmful restrictions on in-person services, threatening patient privacy, closing down clinics, and targeting providers who provide life-saving care. For two years, this decision has sowed chaos and devastation nationwide. I am proud that Americans have rejected this ruling and fought for reproductive freedom. Indeed, a record-high 69% of Americans support abortion access in the first trimester. Kansas, Montana, and Kentucky all took to the ballot box after Dobbs and rejected measures that would further limit abortion. Many other states like Ohio, Michigan, and Vermont passed state constitutional amendments guaranteeing the right to an abortion. Reproductive care is health care, and it is unacceptable that women today have fewer constitutional rights than generations previous.

“Democrats continue to work in the interest of the American people – working to codify rights while Republicans continue to weaponize the courts and bring us even closer to a national abortion ban. Just last week, the Court ruled in favor of the FDA in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA – preserving the status quo for access to mifepristone. I'm relieved by this case's outcome, but we must stay vigilant. There will likely be similar efforts in the months ahead that endanger women's access to reproductive health care, including a case that could limit access to emergency services. Democrats continue to fight these actions led by the divisive, dysfunctional Republican party. The Biden-Harris Administration has already taken action to preserve women’s freedoms. On what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Biden issued a Presidential Memorandum directing further efforts to protect access to medication abortion. President Biden and Democrats across the country will continue fighting and working until Roe v. Wade is once again the law of the land, and women no longer live with the fear that they may too not have access to the rights that are constitutionally theirs.”
