Hoyer Statement on Trump's First 100 Days
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement marking the first 100 days of President Trump's second term:
"Thanks to Donald Trump, Americans are less prosperous, less safe, and less satisfied with the direction of our country than they were 100 days ago when he took office.
"On the campaign trail, Trump promised Americans an economic 'boom like no other.' Instead, his tariffs have caused the American people real pain. Every day, families see their costs skyrocket. Seniors watch their retirement savings evaporate. Small businesses and farms risk going under, unable to navigate the economic uncertainty Trump has created. The average monthly price of eggs hit a record high last month. Meanwhile, the stock market fell more in the first 100 days of the Trump Administration than in the first 100 days of any presidency in the past half century.
"As Americans struggle, Trump intends to pull the rug out from under them by dismantling vital services they use every day. From VA nurses to Social Security workers to cancer researchers, Elon Musk and his DOGE henchmen illegally purge patriotic federal employees who serve the American people. Meanwhile, at Trump's urging, Republicans in Congress have laid the groundwork for the largest cut to Medicaid in history so they can give more massive tax cuts to the richest individuals and corporations in America.
"Abroad, our allies look to us with fear, our adversaries with satisfaction, as Trump forces America to retreat from the world stage. Far from ending the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, Trump continues his futile, fruitless effort to appease Vladimir Putin. He casts doubt on whether the United States will honor its NATO commitments and even talks of taking military action against one of its members. Despite Trump's promise to secure the release of the hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza, dozens remain in captivity.
"The only campaign promise Trump honored in his first 100 days was to bring back his politics of revenge and retribution. He has pardoned violent January 6 insurrectionists, fired top generals, cut off federal grants to institutions he deems disloyal to him personally, threatened judges who rule against his illegal actions, and now flirts with defying court orders all together. The promises that got him elected – to lower costs, to fix immigration, to make government more efficient – are still unfulfilled. If the next 1,361 days of Trump's presidency are anything like the past 100, those promises will remain empty."
