Hoyer Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Chevron Doctrine

June 28, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn decades of Chevron precedent in the cases Relentless v. Department of Commerce and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo:

"The Supreme Court's decision to overturn 40 years of precedent by overruling the 1984 Chevron decision severely undermines the federal government's ability to serve For The People. With this ruling, the Republican-appointed Supreme Court Majority significantly curtailed federal agencies' power to implement our laws. These are the agencies with highly trained, experienced experts, scientists, and technical professionals who report to a President, and are thus accountable to the public.

"These agencies need the flexibility and authority to clarify ambiguities in our laws and issue protections to fulfill their crucial responsibilities on behalf of the American people – whether it's protecting Americans from financial exploitation and dangerous products, defending their health and safety, upholding civil rights, combatting the climate crisis, promoting economic competition, or so much more. This decision will also disrupt the implementation of the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which Democrats enacted last Congress to lower Americans' health care, prescription drug, and energy costs. Instead of the experts, the Court places itself at the center, making all manner of policy calls to slow down progress; a role Congress did not give them.

"This is just the latest example of the Supreme Court's disregard for longstanding legal precedent and reflects Republicans' efforts to vilify vital federal agencies and the critical work that their hardworking employees do for the American people every day."
