Hoyer Statement on September Jobs Report

October 2, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on the September jobs report:

“The September jobs report, which shows that just 29,000 jobs were added to the economy last month and that unemployment ticked up to 4.2%, reflects the uncertainty Americans feel toward the job market and the economy as this Administration’s economic policies do little to address the tough challenges they face every day. For many, the American Dream is feeling farther out of reach as mortgage rates and inflation rise and real wages fall. Across the country, a lack of affordable housing is driving young people out of other communities, and prices for gas, diesel, and groceries continue to climb. However, President Trump still characterizes the affordability crisis as ‘fake,’ and Republicans in Congress have only made it worse.

“The verdict is clear: this Administration does not put working Americans first. Republicans in Congress are failing to deliver on affordability, instead fixated on President Trump’s war of choice with Iran, which has forced Americans to spend $100 billion more on fuel. If returned to the Majority, Democrats are ready to address the affordability crisis and will fight to ensure that our government of the people and by the people always works for the people.”
