Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Senator Mitt Romney

September 15, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after Senator Mitt Romney announced that he will not run for re-election in 2024:

“As Senator Mitt Romney made clear earlier this week, he has decided to retire from Congress at the end of this term. His departure will be a loss for America, the Republican Party, and the United States Senate. We will sorely miss the many virtues that he brings to our national public square.

“Mitt has proven to be a man of high character, intellect, and empathy. He always stands for democracy, not autocracy; civility, not contempt; political courage, not political expediency. Although Mitt and I hold different views on many matters of policy, he has always treated me – and everyone else with whom he disagrees – with dignity and respect. He is also an important voice in Congress for common sense, democratic values, and loyalty to country over party. Mitt’s commitment to principle has remained strong even when facing immense pressure from his party and his peers.

“Mitt may be leaving office at the end of this term, but I know that his moral leadership will continue. He will remain a model of the principled conservatism that has become increasingly scarce in America today. For that, he has my thanks and the gratitude of Americans everywhere. I wish him and his family well as they start this next chapter.”
