Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Rep. Tony Cárdenas
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) announced that he will not run for re-election in 2024:
“When my dear friend Rep. Tony Cárdenas retires from the House at the end of 2024, Congress will lose a tremendous voice for Californians, the Latino community, and all Americans. It has been a privilege to serve alongside Tony this past decade. Although I will be sad to see him leave Capitol Hill, I know that his indelible contributions to our Congress and his service to our country will long endure.
“With sixteen years of experience in the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles City Council, Tony was already a seasoned legislator and lawmaker by the time he came to the House in 2013. He had the vision, intellect, and conviction necessary to get things done. From his successful effort to lay the groundwork for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of the American Latino on the National Mall to advocating for American workers and families on the Energy and Commerce Committee, he has delivered meaningful results.
“Recently, Tony has put his talents to work on the Regional Leadership Council. As Leader for Region 1, Tony has worked to ensure that everyone in Southern California and beyond can access the policies and programs Democrats established last Congress. Tony was instrumental in calling for the creation of Invertir.gov — the Spanish-language version of Invest.gov — to ensure that Latino communities can track our implementation progress.
“Tony is a man of character. He has many accomplishments under his belt, and I know he will continue his public service so long as there’s an opportunity to better his community and country. I look forward to seeing all that he will achieve in the years ahead. I wish him, his incredible wife Norma, and their children well.”
