Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Rep. Nydia Velázquez
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez (NY-07) announced that she will not run for reelection in 2026:
"My friend Rep. Nydia Velázquez is a great New Yorker, Puerto Rican, and American. I have served with her for 32 years in the Congress and am sad to hear that she will retire at the end of the 119th Congress. Passionate, principled, and tenacious, she has proven to be an invaluable Member of this institution time and time again.
"Throughout the years, we have worked together to address an issue that deserves more attention: self-determination for Puerto Rico. Her commitment to that cause is rooted in the experiences of her upbringing and her conviction that colonial control over Puerto Rico is incompatible with American values of democracy and freedom. Nydia has been a fierce advocate for allowing the people of Puerto Rico to determine the future political status of their island – whether that is statehood, independence, or free association with the United States. We passed the Puerto Rico Status Act in the House during the 117th Congress in an effort to give them that choice, and we continue to advocate for the adoption of that crucial legislation.
"Nydia has made her mark on this institution, not only through the legislation she has passed but also through her mentorship of numerous other Members over the years. For 27 years, she has served as the top Democrat on the House Small Business Committee. Her impact extends beyond Congress to her city, to her Puerto Rican community, and to her nation. I thank her for her many years of friendship and service and look forward to continuing to work alongside her in the months to come."
