Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Rep. John Sarbanes
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) announced that he will not run for re-election in 2024:
“John Sarbanes is a public servant of the highest order, as was his late father Paul. He is a man of great character, high intellect, and deep conviction. John is my dear friend, and I know that Marylanders not only in his district but in every corner of our state will miss having him in their congressional delegation. I certainly will.
“Throughout his nine terms in the House of Representatives, John has made indelible contributions to our state and our nation. From preserving the waters of the Chesapeake to creating new opportunities for our state's workers and families, he has helped build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Maryland. The positive impact of his service extends far beyond Maryland, however. A member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, he was instrumental in helping Democrats pass, defend, and expand the historic Affordable Care Act. Americans across the country will benefit from John's work on that issue and on many others like it for generations to come.
“Crucially, John is a vigorous defender of our democracy. Thanks to his leadership, the House passed the For The People Act to help Congress function more ethically, transparently, and effectively. We also worked together to help the House advance the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. While our effort to enact those crucial laws continues, I have faith that John’s devotion to protecting voting rights and strengthening Americans’ faith in their democracy will endure.
“John’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the People's House and our democratic institutions is a testament to his own integrity as a Member and as a man. Amid the vitriol in American politics today, we need more of the thoughtful, constructive, and principled leadership that John Sarbanes brings to Capitol Hill every day. Although John will leave Congress at the end of the term, Maryland and America will continue to benefit from John's leadership for many years to come. For that, I am not only grateful but hopeful for the future of our state and nation.”
