Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Rep. Dan Kildee
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) announced that he will not run for re-election in 2024:
“Dan Kildee has stood up for the people of Michigan ever since he was elected to the Flint Board of Education when he was just 18 years old. Forty-six years later, a decade of which he spent in the House of Representatives, Dan remains the same passionate advocate for his fellow Michiganders and Americans. Our Congress and our country are better for his service, and I will be sad to see my dear friend retire from the House at the end of this term.
“From the first time I met Dan, I could tell that he was someone of strong character, sound judgment, and great intellect. Crucially, he knew how to build consensus with people who disagreed with him. These traits led me to appoint him to serve as one of my Assistant Whips in 2013. From building unity in our Caucus as Co-Chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee to fostering greater cooperation between Democrats and Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee, Dan demonstrated his ability to bring people together to deliver results.
“I have always admired Dan's perseverance – especially in the face of his cancer diagnosis earlier this year. He confronted that challenge with the same determination that he does with any other obstacle. We were all relieved when we learned he had won his fight with cancer. His time on Capitol Hill may be nearing its end, but I know that Dan will continue to serve the people of his city, state, and country for many years to come.”
