Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Rep. Brian Higgins
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced that he will not run for re-election in 2024:
“Like many of my colleagues on Capitol Hill and many Americans in New York's 26th District and beyond, I was sad to learn that my friend, Rep. Brian Higgins, will retire from Congress in February. He has done so much to bring Democrats and Republicans together on a variety of issues over the years. His departure is a great loss for our Congress and all those who believe in the power of consensus.
“Insightful, honest, and courteous, Brian has all the traits of a good leader and legislator. He put those virtues to good use as a Member of the Buffalo Common Council, the New York State Assembly, and the House of Representatives. For years, he has been a key supporter of my Make It In America agenda and our efforts to improve our infrastructure, invest in skills training, and ensure working families have the tools they need to get ahead. Brian has also fought to improve the quality, affordability, and accessibility of health care, child care, and education throughout our country. I have also admired his contributions to international peace-building efforts everywhere from Northern Ireland to South Sudan.
“No matter the issue at hand, Brian always tries to approach it with the same constructive, collaborative strategy. I share many of his frustrations as those opportunities for bipartisan cooperation seem to become increasingly rare. I appreciate all Brian has done to push back against that disturbing trend in our politics. I wish him well as he leaves Congress and continues to serve the people of his state and country.”
