March 11, 2024 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on the President's FY2025 budget proposal: “Today, President Biden revealed a budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2025 that would ensure that the American economy remains, as President Biden said in the State of the Union, 'literally the envy of the world.' His budget would lower Americans' costs, bring fairness to the tax code, cut the deficit by more than $3 trillion, protect Medicare and Social Security, and strengthen America's economic foundation. From infrastructure to manufacturing, cheaper energy to more affordable health care, this budget will advance the progress we have made through our Investing in America Agenda. “As a longtime champion of pay parity between uniformed members of the military and civilian federal employees who often work alongside each other, I am disappointed that for the first time, President Biden's budget does not observe the concept of pay parity. Instead, it includes a 2% cost of living adjustment for federal civilian employees – including the more than 80,000 who live in Maryland's Fifth District - while proposing a 4.5% cost of living adjustment for uniformed members of the military. As the Ranking Member of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, I will work to address this issue in this year's appropriations process. “Ultimately, this budget would help Americans across the country get ahead, including right here in Maryland. As a longstanding proponent of Maryland's Judy Centers, I commend President Biden for calling for a $200 million investment to expand full-service community schools throughout the nation. His budget would also provide key funding to critical military installations in our district, including Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Fort Meade, NSWC Indian Head, and Joint Base Andrews. “I commend President Biden and his Administration, especially OMB Director Shalanda Young, for their work on this proposal. This budget reflects Democrats' commitment to putting People Over Politics and to Investing in America. I look forward to advancing that mission on the Appropriations Committee as we conclude our work for Fiscal Year 2024 and start anew on Fiscal Year 2025. Together, we must ensure that our government can continue to do its vital work For The People.” Issues: Budget & Fiscal Responsibility
