Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Congressman Raúl Grijalva

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on the passing of U.S. Representative Raúl Grijalva (AZ-07):

"I join people across our country and beyond in mourning my dear friend Raúl Grijalva, who passed away earlier today. It was a privilege to serve with him for the twenty-two years he spent in the People's House. 

"A man of great conviction, humility, and intellect, Raúl was always an important voice in our Congress and our country. He demonstrated his principled leadership as a longtime co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. As Chair of House Natural Resources Committee, he fought tirelessly to protect our public lands and preserve our environment. Raúl was also an indispensable partner in our shared effort to pass the Puerto Rico Status Act, which would grant Puerto Ricans control over their island's political future at long last. 

"No matter the task at hand, Raúl was always committed to helping Arizonans and Americans get ahead. Even as he fought his courageous battle with cancer, he never wavered in that commitment. I pray for Raúl's family as they grieve this terrible loss – a loss not only for their family but for all of America."
