Hoyer Statement in Observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day:

"Eighty years after the Allies liberated the Nazi concentration camps, International Holocaust Remembrance Day offers us an opportunity not only to mourn the more than 6 million Jews and millions of other victims who perished in history's worst genocide but also to recommit ourselves to fighting the hatred, apathy, and prejudice that fueled the Holocaust and that still fester today.

"We have seen a haunting, unacceptable surge in antisemitism since Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel. An Anti-Defamation League study recently found that 46% of the world's adult population holds antisemitic beliefs, more than double the level the survey found a decade ago. From protesters brandishing signs calling for a second Holocaust to leading public figures performing Nazi salutes before cheering crowds, we continue to see efforts to misconstrue, trivialize, and outright deny the history of the Holocaust.

"As the number of Holocaust survivors grows fewer and fewer each year, our responsibility to preserve and share their stories becomes greater. That's why I continue my work to expand Holocaust education in the United States and to support the Jewish community in America, Israel, and around the world. We do so because antisemitism threatens not only Jews but democracy itself."
