Hoyer Statement on Labor Day

September 4, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement in celebration of Labor Day:

“As we celebrate Labor Day, I invite everyone to join me in honoring hardworking American workers and the men and women of organized labor who have fought to ensure critical workers’ protections. From farmers to engineers, web developers to restauranteurs, America’s workers are the backbone of our country and our economy. That's why Democrats’ Investing in America agenda doesn’t just mean investing in our nation but investing in our working families.

“Last Congress, we enacted laws to keep workers employed through the pandemic and to lower their health care, prescription drug, and energy costs. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act are helping add millions of good-paying union jobs to our economy by reinvigorating American manufacturing and infrastructure. As Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, I am fighting to ensure that organized labor and America’s workers know that Democrats have their back as we implement these transformative laws. We're creating new opportunities for working families, lowering their costs, and providing them with the tools they need to Make It In America.

“During my time as House Majority Leader, I helped lead House Democrats in passing other critical legislation to support workers and unions. That includes the Raise the Wage Act, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, and the Protecting the Right to Organize or PRO Act, which would ensure that every worker is free to join a union and bargain collectively. Although Republicans blocked that legislation from becoming law, we will continue pushing for further progress for our workers in the months and years ahead. This Labor Day, we recommit ourselves to that important work and give thanks for all the Americans who continue to build a stronger, more prosperous nation for all.”
