May 17, 2024 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, released the following statement on Infrastructure Week 2024: “Infrastructure Week 2024 may be coming to a close, but the infrastructure decade that we launched when we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) is just getting started. It has only been two and a half years since we enacted that historic law, and the Biden-Harris Administration has already announced BIL funding for more than 56,000 public infrastructure projects in more than 4,500 communities nationwide. That includes repairs on 165,000 miles of roads and 9,400 bridges, the replacement of 1.7 million toxic lead service lines for drinking water, terminal expansions to over 300 airports, and much more. Those numbers will only continue to grow in the years to come. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has delivered for Marylanders as well – whether it's transformative projects like the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel or the 21,036 households in Maryland's Fifth District that saw their high-speed internet costs go down thanks to the Affordable Connectivity Program. These are just a few of the ways the BIL continues to make a positive difference on our Maryland communities. “Just as I was proud to bring the BIL to the House Floor and to help lead Democrats in passing it, I now work to implement that same law in every corner of the country as Chair of the Regional Leadership Council. Our council continues to coordinate closely with the Biden-Harris Administration and House Democrats to ensure that every American knows and feels the positive impact of our Investing in America agenda. From securing federal funding for the Francis Scott Key Bridge to renewing the Affordable Connectivity Program after Republicans allowed it to expire a few weeks ago, Congress must not only implement the BIL but build on its legacy. Together, Democrats will keep fighting to ensure that everyone in the nation has the tools and opportunities they need to Make It In America.”
