Hoyer Statement on House Passage of Bipartisan Tax Legislation

January 31, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement tonight after the House passed the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act:

“Today, I joined a broad bipartisan majority in passing the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, an important compromise for a Congress that rarely finds the consensus necessary to legislate. Strengthening the Child Tax Credit, this bill will pull half a million children out of poverty and help 16 million more. It will expand affordable housing and bring much needed tax relief to those recovering from natural disasters. It will also restore the tax incentive for businesses to invest in research here in America after President Trump and Congressional Republicans unilaterally raised taxes on our innovation sector. And, perhaps most important of all, it sets an important precedent that we can do all of this without adding a dime to the deficit.

“Work remains to restore the historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit I helped secure as Majority Leader in the 117th Congress by helping lead Democrats in passing the American Rescue Plan. When there's an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of millions of families across the country, however, we cannot afford to allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.”
