Hoyer Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day

April 13, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah:

“Today, I join in observing Yom HaShoah and remembering the 6 million Jews killed in the Nazis' horrific genocide. We honor the courage of the resistors, resilience of the survivors, and the heroism of those who risked their lives to save their neighbors.

“Our responsibility to share the lessons we learned from the horrors of the Holocaust becomes greater as we witness the many ongoing attempts to deny, distort, and even glorify this dark period of history. Two-and-a-half years after Hamas's brutal October 7 attack on Israel, we continue to observe the kind of antisemitism, intolerance, and indifference that fueled the Holocaust around the world and even here in America. We must remember how antisemitic rhetoric can quickly turn into violence and persecution. If we fail to call it out, stand up against it, and hold perpetrators accountable for their prejudiced messages and actions, our commitment to 'Never Again' will surely falter.

“It falls to each of us to excise the cancer of antisemitism from our society whenever and wherever it appears. Jewish communities in America, in Israel, and around the world deserve to live in peace and security - as all people do. We must find courage in the face of this threat, and we draw inspiration from those whose courage in the face of genocide we will never forget. It is up to all of us to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust does not fade from history but instead helps shape a better, more just future for all."
