Hoyer Statement on Hamas' Return of the Body of Itay Chen to Israel

November 5, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after confirmation that the body of Itay Chen, an American Israeli murdered and abducted by Hamas during its terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, and the final U.S. hostage, has been returned to Israel:

"Last year, when we learned that Itay Chen – an American Israeli serving in the IDF – had been murdered instead of captured on October 7, I promised his parents Ruby and Hagit that America’s commitment to bringing their son home had not changed. Today, we fulfill that promise. I am relieved that his remains are returning home at long last. He was the final American held by Hamas.

“For the past 760 days, his family has been living a nightmare. They have waited anxiously for the opportunity to sit shiva and lay Itay to rest with the dignity that every human being deserves. I have mourned with Ruby and Hagit over the past two grueling years. I have been in awe of their remarkable strength and continued advocacy for all the hostage families.

“I am praying for the Chens as they mourn their son. This nightmare may be over for them, but it continues for the seven hostage families who still await their loved ones. America, Israel, and our partners must continue to do everything we can to bring the seven remaining hostages home.”
