Hoyer Statement on February Jobs Report

March 7, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on the February jobs report:

"The February jobs report revealed that 151,000 jobs were added to the economy last month – a continuation of record job growth momentum that we saw under the Biden Administration thanks to Democrats' Investing in America Agenda. Last month, unemployment ticked up to 4.1%.

"Already, however, we have seen how Donald Trump's radical policies threaten to reverse America's economic progress. In the past few weeks, we have seen inflation go up, grocery bills soar, consumer confidence drop, and the stock market slide. These signs aren't a coincidence; they're a product of this administration's actions. Just this week, Trump continued to flip flop on his universal tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and other vital U.S. trading partners that will increase costs on everything from groceries to gas. Under these tariffs, Americans will end up spending hundreds of dollars more per year on consumer goods while receiving nothing but more uncertainty in return. Trump and Congressional Republicans are also advancing a plan to make draconian cuts to Medicaid while forcing Americans to cover the cost of trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals. Meanwhile, they continue their relentless assault on vital services that help Americans get ahead – from veterans' care to Social Security to small business assistance and much more.

"Instead of focusing on bringing down costs, Donald Trump is wreaking vengeance on his political opponents and padding the pockets of his fellow billionaires. He believes America ought to work for him and him alone. I will keep fighting to ensure that everyone can Make It In America."
