Hoyer Statement on Establishment of White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, issued the following statement on the creation of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention:
“All Americans – no matter where they live – deserve to live in safety and without the fear that they or someone they love will fall victim to gun violence. That's why as House Majority Leader in the 117th Congress, I brought the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the most significant piece of gun control legislation in decades – to the Floor and helped pass it through Congress. After years of Republican inaction and obstruction on this issue in the face of countless mass shootings and hundreds of thousands of American gun deaths, we finally broke the cycle of negligence and secured a law to address gun violence, improve mental health, and build safer communities across America. Our work did not end with the enactment of that law, however. We now need to implement the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in every corner of the country and build on the progress it made. I praise President Biden and Vice President Harris for demonstrating their continued commitment to that effort by establishing the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
“As Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, I look forward to working with White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention Director Stefanie Feldman and Deputy Directors Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox to implement these programs and policies in every community across America. We must add to the momentum we've built on this issue. Democrats will not yield until the tragedies we have seen unfold in Newtown, Orlando, Buffalo, El Paso, Las Vegas, Uvalde, and in streets and homes in every corner of the country are a thing of the past.”
