Hoyer Statement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 20, 2025

"We observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year amid another divisive moment in our nation's history. We ought to find wisdom in how he understood, navigated, and resisted the injustices, hatreds, and divisions of his own time – whether through his commitment to nonviolence, his advocacy for greater economic opportunity, or his recognition that civil rights at home and human rights abroad are intertwined.

"Many Americans are concerned by our nation's direction. As Dr. King said in 1962, however, 'we must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.' He and so many others kept the dream of a better, more equal America alive in the face of countless setbacks and disappointments. So must we. In the coming years, let us preserve the infinite hope that Dr. King preached by standing up for the principles, the freedoms, and the progress for which he gave his life."
