Hoyer Statement on April Jobs Report

May 8, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on the April jobs report:

“While last month saw modest job growth with around 115,000 jobs added, unemployment remaining at 4.3%, and inflation at 3.3%, the labor market continues to endure long-term challenges as a result of the Trump Administration’s policies. The President promised a manufacturing boom, and yet that sector has lost 66,000 jobs over the past year. These numbers do little to dispel the economic uncertainty Americans have been experiencing since Trump took office.

“President Trump's reckless economic policies have prevented our economy from continuing its steady growth when he took office. On top of his Administration's cuts to food assistance and affordable health care, rising gas prices, grocery costs, and other utility costs require hardworking families to make increasingly difficult choices. Additionally, we have yet to see the full effects of Trump's war of choice with Iran on our economy.

“Rather than tackle the affordability impacting thousands of households across the country, Republicans in Congress are focused on securing billions in taxpayer dollars to stroke the President's ego. The MAGA majority in Congress has been working to fund the President's vanity projects and to enact appropriations that would place further strain on the essential services Americans rely on to keep food on the table and access opportunities. Republicans are once again telling Americans: ‘You’re On Your Own.’"
