Hoyer Statement on the 22nd Anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement marking the twenty-second anniversary of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001:

“On the twenty-second anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, I join in honoring and remembering the 2,977 Americans who lost their lives and in praying for their countless family, friends, and loved ones. That day inflicted unconscionable pain upon our nation, but it also inspired a sense of national solidarity, resolve, and camaraderie that we hadn't seen in generations. May we continue to channel that spirit of unity not just today but every day.

“Let us also remember the bravery of those who risked their lives to save their fellow Americans on that horrific day. Police officers and firefighters from all parts of the country stepped up when we needed them most, including first responders right here in Maryland’s 5th District. As a co-chair and longtime member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I have been proud to advance legislation to support our first responders. In 2019, during my time as House Majority Leader, I brought legislation to reauthorize the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund in perpetuity, and just this June, I introduced legislation to reauthorize the Firefighter Cancer Registry and increase its funding.

“As we reflect and mourn today, let us remember the important values of American democracy, equality, justice, and human dignity that we saw in the American heroes who risked their lives on September 11, 2001. May we all have the courage to practice these values every day.”
