Hoyer Applauds New IRS Strategic Operating Plan to Improve Service and Reduce the Deficit
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, issued the following statement after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released its new Strategic Operating Plan:
"The Strategic Operating Plan that the IRS released this week is an impressive blueprint that will ensure the agency's success for years to come. From improving customer service to upgrading essential technology, the IRS is committed to making it easier for Americans to pay their taxes. Additionally, the plan outlines how the IRS will expand its enforcement efforts to ensure that very high-income individuals and businesses pay their fair share – all without increasing audits on Americans making less than $400,000. This increased enforcement against those who flout the law will reduce our deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars, which is why I worked tirelessly as Majority Leader last Congress to secure vital resources for the IRS in the Inflation Reduction Act.
"I'm concerned, however, by the new Majority's recent proposal to undermine the IRS's ability to stand up to wealthy tax cheats on behalf of the American people. Such a move would only burden those who play by the rules and pay their fair share by enabling further tax fraud. As Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, I will keep opposing these cuts so that we can build a tax system that Americans can trust and where no one, no matter how wealthy, can avoid paying what they owe."
