April 17, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Members of Washington Metro Area's House Delegation met today with Members of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board, led by Chairwoman Catherine Hudgins (VA), for an update on ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of the local transit system and additional issues regarding their strategic plan for WMATA's future.

Participating in today's meeting were Representatives Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5), Frank R. Wolf (VA-10), James P. Moran (VA-8), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), Chris Van Hollen (MD-8), Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) and Gerald E. Connolly (VA-11), who released the following statement:

"We want to thank Chairwoman Hudgins and Members of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board for meeting with the Washington Metro Area Delegation today to update Members on its ongoing plans for implementing needed infrastructure and safety improvements as identified in recent federal audits and oversight. Operating the second largest rail system and the sixth largest bus system in the country, WMATA is responsible for carrying over 1 million passengers per day, including 40% of federal employees who rely on this system to commute to and from work. In addition, it is relied on by the millions of Americans from across the country that come to visit their nation's capital and its sites every year. Our transit system is critical to the day-to-day functioning of the Capital Region, and as its Representatives in Congress, we will continue working to ensure that the Federal Government is an active partner to provide safe and reliable service to each of those residents, commuters, and visitors to our nation's capital."
