NEWSLETTER: Statehood for Washington, DC Now

June 18, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

On Tuesday, I announced that I will bring H.R. 51, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's bill to grant Washington, DC statehood to the House Floor for a vote on Friday, June 26. I expect the House will pass this long overdue legislation, which will bring us one step closer to ensuring that the 700,000 citizens of DC are finally treated fairly and receive the same representation as their fellow Americans in all 50 states.

If DC were a state, it could not be shortchanged as it was under the CARES Act and its residents would be protected from the kind of civil rights violations we saw in Lafayette Square earlier this month. Our fellow citizens living in the District of Columbia ought to be treated equally and with respect. I look forward to the passage of this critical legislation in the House, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to support statehood for DC. It is inconceivable that we would continue to disenfranchise 700,000 American citizens, and we ought to remedy that now.

As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Sincerely Yours,
