NEWSLETTER: Recognizing Hardworking Small Businesses in Maryland

September 25, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

This week is National Small Business Week. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy in Maryland - there are more than 11,000 small businesses in the Fifth District, employing more than 120,000 Marylanders. Small businesses create jobs and employ thousands of workers in our communities, but so many have struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was glad to help secure critical funding through the CARES Act to help our small businesses keep operating with the creation of the Paycheck Protection Program and Emergency Economic Injury Grants and Loans.

However, it's inexcusable that Senator Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have refused to take further action to help struggling small businesses. Over four months ago, the Democratic-led House passed the Heroes Act to ensure small businesses would continue to receive the assistance they need during this pandemic. But Senate Republicans have refused to act on it, telling small business owners and their employees, "you're on your own." Their refusal to work with Democrats to provide relief to hardworking Americans is unacceptable.

I'll continue working with my colleagues to provide relief for small businesses in our state. As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my here.

Sincerely Yours,
