NEWSLETTER: Prematurely Ending Enhanced Unemployment Benefits Hurts Maryland Families

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN HOYER

Governor Hogan’s decision to prematurely end enhanced unemployment benefits that have kept unemployed workers afloat during this pandemic will severely harm tens of thousands of families in Maryland. While the number of COVID-19 cases have come down in our state, many Marylanders still face economic challenges as a result of this pandemic. Governor Hogan’s short-sighted decision will hurt families who are still struggling to make ends meet.

Last week I joined the Maryland Congressional Delegation in calling on Governor Hogan to immediately reverse his decision to cut off this critical assistance for Maryland workers. Too many families in our state are still struggling with affordable and available child care, making it more challenging for parents, and especially mothers, to return to the workforce.

This pandemic has cost Marylanders their jobs through no fault of their own. The Governor’s abrupt decision underscores the importance of the President’s American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan for our communities to Build Back Better. I will continue working with my colleagues to advance President Biden’s agenda of affordable child care and paid leave policies, while also working to create equitable economic opportunities that make it easier for Marylanders to get back to work.

As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram. If you are experiencing a personal difficulty such as issues accessing veterans benefits or another problem regarding a federal agency and you wish for my office to place an inquiry on your behalf, please complete the casework request form by clicking here.

Sincerely Yours,
