NEWSLETTER: Honoring our Nation's Heroes

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, I hope each one of us will take some time to reflect on those who paid the ultimate price in defense of our nation and our freedom. I am so proud to represent tens of thousands of veterans in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District, which is home to Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center, and Webster Field, St. Inigoes.

I always look forward to the annual Memorial Day Parade in Bowie, during which we come together to honor those who have died in service to our great country. I am disappointed we won’t be able to celebrate in person this year, but l hope we can each spend time this weekend reflecting on the bravery of our fellow Americans who have fallen in defense of our country and give thanks for their extraordinary sacrifice.

As we commemorate Memorial Day, we also remember the thousands of Marylanders we've lost to COVID-19, including health care personnel, first responders, and other front-line heroes – as well as many of our veterans. I join communities across our state in mourning for those we've lost in the past few months, and my prayers continue to be with their families as they grieve.

As Congress responds to this emergency, I continue to be focused on keeping the faith with our veterans and ensuring they can get through this crisis. The legislation I have brought to the Floor includes a number of provisions to protect veterans, including ensuring they will not have co-pays for treatment and services related to COVID-19, temporarily suspending debt-collection activities, and expanding emergency assistance for veterans experiencing homelessness.  I will continue to work in Congress to ensure that our veterans are able to weather this storm.

I join with every Marylander this Memorial Day to honor the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, I thank all those who have served and continue to serve our nation.

As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.

Sincerely Yours,
