NEWSLETTER: Former President Trump Must be Convicted in the Senate

February 8, 2021

A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER

The January 6th attack on the United States Capitol was an attack on our democracy, and the very core of American ideals and values. Former President Donald Trump's effort to overturn the clear election result led to the insurrection we saw on January 6. This week, the Senate will begin the second impeachment trial of former President Trump to hold him accountable for inciting that insurrection.

The mob that stormed the Capitol was clearly inspired by, and called to action by, former President Trump. During his speech to the crowd on January 6, the President used the words ‘fight' or ‘fighting' 20 times as he instructed his supporters to ‘stop the steal.' He organized the mob, inflamed the mob, and deployed them to the Capitol. They assaulted police officers and killed one; terrorized and endangered the lives of Members, staffers, and reporters; and sought to inflict damage to an institution that we hold dear. Former President Trump must be held accountable for the insurrection he encouraged. That is why I believe my Republican colleagues must show courage and convict former President Trump during the upcoming impeachment trial.

Leaders must be held accountable for their actions. That's why I brought to the House Floor a resolution last week to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from her House Committees. casework request form by clicking here.
