June 17, 2022 Press Release A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN HOYER As I said just this morning during my interview with Joe Madison, families in Maryland's Fifth District are hurting from the rising costs of inflation. All over the world and right here in Maryland, we are feeling the impact of a tragic war waged by Putin in Ukraine; this is not just a war on democracy abroad, but also an affront against our country's working families, farmers, and businesses. That is why my Democratic colleagues and I passed vital legislation to address inflation and lower every day costs for working families. This week, the House passed the bipartisan Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which would help alleviate backlogs at American ports while also cracking down on predatory practices by international ocean shipping companies. This bill builds on Democrats' efforts earlier this year to fight price gouging and lower costs, and I am very glad to see President Biden has already signed it into law. In addition, yesterday, I brought the urgently-needed, bipartisan Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act to the House Floor. This bill lowers costs at the grocery store by lowering costs for farmers and by increasing competition in the meat and poultry sector. Specifically, this legislation promotes efficient fertilizer use, increases access to biofuels, and supports small and new meat processors and producers. Importantly, this bill also strengthens our food supply chain. I hope the Senate will take up this bill as soon as possible to lower costs for the American people. As always, I encourage all Fifth-District residents to continue sharing their concerns and feedback with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. If you are need of assistance, such as with help accessing veterans' benefits or have another issue regarding a federal agency, and you wish for my office to place an inquiry on your behalf, please complete the casework request form by clicking here. Sincerely Yours, Steny H. Hoyer
