NEWSLETTER: Celebrating our Civil Rights Heroes
A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN HOYER
Over the weekend, I had the great honor of hosting the Faith and Politics Congressional pilgrimage to the Eastern Shore. There, I joined friends, community members, and my colleagues in the House in reflecting on the extraordinary lives of Maryland's heroes, including Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Gloria Richardson. Each of these Marylanders were instrumental in advancing civil rights in our state and country as they courageously confronted slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and white supremacy.
I appreciate the work Maryland has done to reconcile with our past and embrace the stories of our civil rights activists. In Congress, I continue to urge the Senate to pass my legislation to remove hate, so that we can get rid of symbols of the confederacy and racism from the halls of Congress and celebrate more of our nation's freedom fighters. We must continue the work of these brave Marylanders toward achieving equality and equity, including making sure everyone has access to the ballot box and taking a stand against discrimination and bigotry to affirm that Black Lives Matter. I encourage you to visit our Eastern Shore and learn from our past so that, as was expressed several times during our pilgrimage, we may march forward toward a better future.
As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. If you are experiencing a personal difficulty such as issues accessing veterans benefits or another problem regarding a federal agency and you wish for my office to place an inquiry on your behalf, please complete the casework request form by clicking here.
Sincerely Yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
