In the News: Hoyer Speech on Democratic Domestic Agenda in 112th Congress
Wanted to make sure you saw some of today's news stories highlighting Majority Leader Hoyer's speech this morning at an event hosted by the National Press Club on the need for American leaders to look beyond two-year election cycles to address the challenges facing our country, including job creation, economic growth, and fiscal responsibility.
From The Hill:
Citing the possibility of "fiscal turmoil," outgoing House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Monday called for bipartisan cooperation in the next Congress to tackle budget deficits and reform the tax code.
"The threat of fiscal turmoil is concrete, not abstract — and it will be felt in the life of every American," he said in prepared remarks at the National Press Club. "No other issue calls so strongly for leaders who understand the importance of hard choices and hard truths."
Hoyer said he was "heartened that the president's bipartisan fiscal commission put forward a provocative, challenging plan on debt — a plan that needs to be at the center of our national conversation."
From the Washington Post:
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) said Monday that he believes the House will approve a tax-cut deal cut by President Obama and congressional Republicans - though he said House Democrats may try to amend it first.
Hoyer, speaking at the National Press Club on Monday morning, said he liked some aspects of the deal, including tax cuts for families earning less than $250,000 per year, and a one-year reduction in payroll taxes for Social Security.
He said he did not like the tax cuts for family income above $250,000 and estate-tax provisions that he said favored the wealthy. But in a speech that repeatedly urged Republicans and Democrats to find "common ground," Hoyer said compromise was inevitable.
