National Nonpartisan Environmental Group Awards Hoyer High Marks

March 1, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), a national nonpartisan organization, released a Continuing Resolution Special Edition National Environmental Scorecard, revealing Member scores for environmental, public health, and energy votes taken on amendments to the House-passed spending bill.  Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) received a 100% rating, which is a testament to his efforts to protect the environment and promote good environmental and energy policies.

"I am pleased to have received a 100% rating from the LCV on this special edition scorecard," said Congressman Hoyer. "It is critical that we protect and invest in our environment and pursue responsible energy policies that deliver positive benefits today and in the future. Maryland and the Fifth District are blessed with a number of natural resources and I am committed to their protection. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress, our regional delegation, and environmental leaders in Maryland to determine the best ways to keep our land, air and water clean."

Throughout his career, Hoyer has led efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent, Potomac, Anacostia, and St. Mary's Rivers, fighting for and securing federal funding to address a variety of restoration and water quality issues in these Fifth District waterways.

The Special Edition Scorecard includes 25 votes, including several amendments offered to block the Environmental Protection Agency from protecting public health and holding polluters accountable.  Other amendments would cut funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency, climate change research, lands conservation and restoration, and additional important environmental programs.

Hoyer was among only 86 Members to earn a perfect score of 100% on this Special Edition Scorecard, while 74 Members earned a score of 0%.  To view the scorecard, click here.
