Hoyer Welcomes Marylanders to the U.S. Capitol Ahead of Vote on H.R. 5, the Equality Act

May 17, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - This morning, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) welcomed Fifth District constituents to the U.S. Capitol ahead of today's historic vote on H.R. 5, the Equality Act. The legislation amends the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in housing, employment, education, jury service, credit and financing, and public accommodations.

"On International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, I am proud to bring the Equality Act to the House Floor and welcome Marylanders to the Capitol to watch debate on this critically important legislation to ban LGBT discrimination nationwide," said Congressman Hoyer. "It is shameful that LGBT Americans are at risk of being fired or denied services in states across the nation based on who they are. The Equality Act is long overdue, and as a proud co-sponsor of the bill, I look forward to its passage later today. I urge my Republican colleagues in the House to support this important bill on the Floor today. Following House passage, I hope the Senate will take it up and pass it without delay."
