Hoyer Visits U.S. Government Students at Great Mills High School
GREAT MILLS, MD –Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) visited Advanced Placement U.S. Government classes at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland. During his visit, he met with nearly 50 students, and discussed a number of issues including civic engagement, the importance of voting, investing in STEM learning, Pax River Naval Air Station, and his recent visit to Alabama where he marked the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
"I was pleased to visit with students in Mr. Travis Guthrie's class at Great Mills High School today and to answer their questions and encourage them to get them engaged in the importance of U.S. government and the role it plays in their everyday lives," said Congressman Hoyer. "Greater civic engagement will help these students develop an appreciation and enthusiasm for some of the critical issues facing our state and our nation today. At Great Mills, they are preparing students for the future by promoting STEM education which is important to ensuring future economic prosperity. In Congress, I will keep working to make sure there are good jobs in Maryland for this generation of students that enables them to pursue the American Dream."
"I was also honored to discuss my incredible journey to Selma, Alabama last weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday," continued Congressman Hoyer. "Joining me on the trip was Great Mills High School student Mia Moore. In Alabama, Mia had an opportunity to meet veterans of the 1965 march, hear from President Obama and Rep. John Lewis, and commemorate the arrival of the final 1965 march at the Alabama State Capitol. I was proud to listen to her tell her peers today about this experience. The students at Great Mills High are America's next generation, and it will be up to them to make sure that the march for civil rights, voting rights, and full access to their unalienable rights under our Declaration of Independence continues onward."
Rep. Hoyer also joined Principal Jake Heibel to visit an art classroom and a classroom that's a part of Great Mills High School's STEM program, which promotes student interest in science, technology, engineering, and math fields.
