June 22, 2015

COLLEGE PARK, MD Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today toured the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park. The NOAA Center provides our country with expert weather, water, and climate forecasts that save lives and livelihoods.

"I was pleased to visit the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction this morning and to thank Dr. Uccellini and the employees for the work they perform on behalf of American families and businesses every day," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "This world-class facility is home to hundreds of meteorologists, scientists and other NOAA employees who provide weather predictions and forecasts that people across the country rely on. We are grateful for the important work they do, which plays a significant role in saving lives and providing important data to advance scientific research."

"The NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction is an asset to Maryland, the entire country and even the globe. In many regards, this is where weather forecasting begins," said Louis Uccellini, Ph.D., director of NOAA's National Weather Service. "It's here where billions of observations are sent to be processed by detailed models on advanced supercomputers that produce the forecast guidance used by meteorologists around the world. This center provides the environmental intelligence necessary for more resilient communities. I would like to thank Representative Hoyer for his support in bringing this center of innovation and collaboration to the M Square Research Park at the University of Maryland."

Following the tour and briefing, Rep. Hoyer met with NOAA's employees to discuss his support of federal employees and to answer questions and concerns from them.
