Hoyer Tours Alice Ferguson Foundation's Environmental Education Building

June 16, 2016

ACCKOKEEK, MD –Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) toured the Alice Ferguson Foundation's Grass Day-Use Building, a "living building" which opened in 2015. The state-of-the-art building uses geothermal and solar energy for heating and cooling, treats waste water and storm water on site and reuses grey water for landscape irrigation.

"I'm proud that one of the most innovative and environmentally sustainable building projects in the world is here in Prince George's County and I was pleased to visit this state-of-the-art building today," stated Congressman Steny Hoyer. "I want to thank the Alice Ferguson Foundation for educating the public about environmental sustainability and conservation since 1954. I look forward to continuing to work with the Foundation to ensure that future generations of Marylanders will have an opportunity to learn and care for our environment through innovation and conservation."

The Grass Day-Use Building embraces the principles of the Living Building Challenge – a set of standards for environmentally responsible building design, construction, operation and maintenance that surpass Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The building is currently in a certification process to be added to the list of fully certified living buildings, which includes only seven buildings in the world.
