Hoyer Statement on WMATA Metro Derailment & Suspension of 7000 Series Cars
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today following the WMATA metro derailment that happened last week which caused the Washington Metro Safety Commission to suspend the use of its 7000 series cars today:
"It is clearly frustrating for every rider across the region to have over 60 percent of the Metro fleet taken off of the tracks today, but this investigation must be done thoroughly and accurately for the safety of the WMATA ridership and its hardworking staff on the frontlines. It is my hope that the investigation is conducted as swiftly as possible so that our commuters can get back to safe and reliable travel. Riders should expect longer wait times than normal as this process continues and should plan accordingly.
"The WMATA metro derailment causes serious concerns and I commend the National Transportation Safety Board for investigating this issue. I also commend the Washington Metro Safety Commission, along with the leadership of WMATA, for making the decision to suspend the use of the 7000 series rail car until all of the cars can be thoroughly reviewed and inspected. This issue has put emphasis on the importance of passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which would invest $150 million a year in WMATA safety and repair. The Metro is a top priority of me and my constituents, and I will continue to work in Congress to advance safe infrastructure for our region."
