Hoyer Statement on the Washington Football Team Name Change

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the Washington football team announced that they will be changing their name:

"The decision to retire the name of Washington‘s football team was long overdue, and I join other fans in welcoming this new beginning. The use of offensive names and images in American sports must come to an end, which is why I've supported changing the name of the team. I hope today's decision paves the way for other teams to make the same needed changes. It is the right thing to do as we seek to stamp out racism in all corners of society, and it is the start of a better future that is inclusive of all fans and players."
