WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September:
“While I’m encouraged that the economy added 126,000 private sector jobs in September and that the unemployment rate dropped to 7.2%, Congress has the responsibility to provide certainty to our economy, businesses, and working families following the costly and unnecessary government shutdown. It’s unfortunate that many businesses and families in the Fifth District experienced lost revenue, furloughs, and other setbacks as a result of the shutdown, and while federal employees will see back pay, contractors and other small businesses may not be able to recover their losses. We owe it to them to negotiate a long-term budget agreement and avoid yet another fiscal crisis.
“With budget conferees beginning discussions next week, I’m hopeful that both parties can negotiate an agreement that is balanced, ends the sequester, and puts our nation on a sound fiscal path. I am also urging my Republican colleagues to bring additional Make It In America legislation to the Floor for a vote so that we can promote job growth here at home and boost American competitiveness. By working together on a bipartisan basis, we can provide our nation with the certainty it deserves, help more of our businesses create jobs here in Maryland and throughout the country, and put more Americans back to work.”
