Hoyer Statement on the Sentencing in the Capital Gazette Case

September 28, 2021

"Three years after the mass shooting at the Capital Gazette that claimed the lives of Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara, and Rebecca Smith, I hope that their families and our state can find some comfort in the sentence that was delivered today. As we continue to heal from that horrific event, which marked the deadliest attack against journalists in our country's history, let us remember and draw strength from the victims' faithful service to the communities they loved. Each of the victims represented the best of Maryland, and their commitment to protect the First Amendment and uphold the truth was a service to our democracy. My prayers are with the victims' families and loved ones today. Let us never falter in our work in Congress to address the epidemic of gun violence and prevent mass shootings like this from happening again."
