Hoyer Statement in Response to Request to Raise Rates on Consumers in the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and Kaiser Permanente requested to increase insurance rates on consumer plans sold through the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange:
"It is unfortunate, though not surprising, that the Trump Administration's decision to end cost-sharing reduction payments is forcing insurers offering plans in the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange to request drastic premium increases for 2018. These requests are further proof that the Trump Administration's efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act is already having severe consequences for families in our state. With the 2018 open enrollment period beginning on November 1, I will closely monitor the proposed rate increases and the impact they will have on Maryland families, and continue to urge my colleagues in Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to stabilize our insurance markets and ensure all Marylanders have access to affordable, quality health care."
