Hoyer Statement on Promotion of Matthew Verderosa to Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police

February 24, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after Matthew Verderosa was named Chief of Police of the U.S. Capitol Police force, succeeding Chief Kim Dine:

"I join in congratulating Chief Matthew Verderosa on his selection as the next Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police.  He is a leader with exceptional qualifications, highly respected by the men and women of the force as one of their own, having risen through the USCP ranks from a uniformed officer on the beat to a detective with the Protective Services Bureau and later Assistant Chief over the course of a thirty-year career.  Chief Verderosa has already overseen security for a number of large-scale events on Capitol Hill, and I am confident he will continue to serve with distinction in his new role leading the USCP.

"I continue to be extraordinarily grateful for the service of the USCP personnel who protect Congressional leaders, staff, and visitors to the Capitol and its office buildings.  Those of us serving and working in Congress witness their professionalism and dedication every day.  We also remember the USCP personnel who lost their lives protecting our nation's democratic institutions of government, including Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut, who fell in the line of duty in 1998.  We will never forget their sacrifice, and I was honored to have Officer Chestnut's widow as my guest at last month's State of the Union Address.

"I wish Chief Verderosa success in his new role, and I look forward to working with him and his team.  I also thank outgoing Chief Kim Dine for his leadership over the past four years."
