Hoyer Statement on Projected Premium Increases Due to Republican Sabotage
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after the Center for American Progress released a report detailing the significant cost Republican efforts to sabotage health insurance markets will have on families in Maryland:
"Republican efforts to sabotage health insurance markets are already having real-world consequences for hardworking families in Maryland. By injecting instability into health insurance markets, the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress are increasing health care costs for thousands of Marylanders and putting coverage at risk for thousands more.
"The report released by the Center for American Progress highlights the lasting effect that Republican efforts to sabotage health care in our country will have on families in our state. Congress ought to be working to expand access to affordable health care to all Americans. I will continue to urge my Republican colleagues to abandon their efforts to undermine health insurance markets, and instead work with Democrats to bring down costs and expand coverage."
According to the Center for American Progress report, many Marylandersin the Fifth District will see a significant increase in their premiums in 2019 as a result of Republican sabotage. The estimated impact of Republicans' sabotage will mean:
- A 40-year-old individual will pay an extra $590.
- A family of four will pay an extra $1,860.
- A 55-year-old couple will pay an extra $2,040.
