WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after Prince George’s County surpassed 30,000 cases of COVID-19 this weekend:
"Prince George’s County has now recorded more than 30,000 cases of COVID-19, with more than 800 Prince Georgians having lost their lives to this deadly disease. All of us are in this fight together, doing our part by wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining social distancing, and staying home when we can. But we must recognize that this is a disease that is affecting certain communities worse than others, as evidenced by the terrible disparities in infection and patient outcomes that put African-Americans, Latinos, and other minorities at higher risk. Since the beginning of this pandemic, I have been pushing for greater data collection so that we can better understand and address these disparities, which have contributed to Prince George’s County having the highest number of cases and fatalities in Maryland. As we continue to fight this pandemic together, I will keep working with federal, state, and county officials and public health experts to ensure that Prince George’s County and hard-hit communities throughout the Fifth District have access to all the resources they need to get this virus under control, stop the spread, and save lives."
