Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Signing of H.J.Res. 76

August 22, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after President Trump signed into law H.J.Res. 76, legislation to establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission:

"With President Trump's signing into law of legislation to establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, it is now up to the three jurisdictions to move forward expeditiously to set up the Commission and work to ensure WMATA gets back on track and regains the trust of its riders. Furthermore, I am hopeful that with the signing of this legislation and the formation of the Commission, the Federal Transit Administration will quickly release the transit funds withheld from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

"Thousands of families throughout the National Capital Region depend on WMATA, and deserve a safe and reliable system that gets them where they need to go. This Commission is an important step in reaffirming our commitment to improving WMATA, but more must be done. I will continue to advocate for a dedicated source of funding so that the system has the resources it needs to ensure the safety and security of its employees and riders.

"I join in thanking Sen. Tim Kaine, my colleagues in the National Capital Region, the state of Maryland, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the District of Columbia for their support of this important legislation."
