Hoyer Statement on President Trump's One-Year Extension of Deferred Enforced Departure Status for Liberians

March 28, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on President Trump's one-year extension of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status for Liberians:

"I am relieved that Liberians living in the United States under Deferred Enforced Departure will have their status extended for another year, following a request I and other Members made to the President last week. Many of these individuals and their families live in Maryland, and I have seen firsthand how much they contribute to our communities and to our economy. It would be unjust to force them to leave this country and return to Liberia, a nation that continues to suffer from civil violence and the outbreak of deadly disease. Our policies must be humane and reflect America's commitment to protect human rights and the safety of those seeking refuge."
