WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on Police Week, which is recognized from May 10 through May 16:
"This Police Week, I join in thanking the law enforcement officers and first responders serving our communities on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Their selflessness and commitment to service has kept Americans safe during this crisis and helped to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the coronavirus. I thank them this week, and every week, for putting their lives on the line to protect families in Maryland and across the country. I'll continue working to ensure our state and local governments have the resources they need to keep law enforcement personnel on the job. Now more than ever, we must ensure that law enforcement officers have the necessary resources to do their jobs safely and effectively and can continue serving their communities.”
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day. Every year since then, Police Week has been celebrated annually during the week in which that date falls to honor our law enforcement officers.
