Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Sylvester Vaughns, Sr.
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on the passing of Sylvester Vaughns, Sr.:
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sylvester Vaughns, Sr. He and I worked together on a number of issues important to Prince George's County going back to my time serving in the State Senate. Sylvester was a leader in the movement for equality and civil rights, and he and his son took a courageous stand to desegregate the County's schools. Later, as President of the Prince George's County NAACP, he worked closely with community leaders and with county, state, and federal officials to ensure that every person in the County would have an equal chance to get a good education, find a job, own a home, and save for a secure retirement. I join in offering my condolences to his children Olivia, Orlette, and Sylvester Jr. and to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May they be comforted by the support of the community and by the enormous impact Sylvester Vaughns had on building a better future for them and for us all."
